OPL3 RetroWave MIDI Player1.1.3

Load Standard MIDI files and play them through software-based OPL3 FM synthesis, computer speakers, a RetroWave OPL3 Express board, or external MIDI hardware. The player concentrates on MIDI playback and retro FM sound instead of serving as a general-purpose media player. This lets listeners and musicians choose between computer audio, dedicated OPL3 hardware, and connected MIDI equipment for the same kind of file.

A Winamp-style playlist loads folders and can shuffle the tracks they contain. During playback, the live OPL3 channel visualizer presents LED, neon, or spectrum-style displays. Software synthesis provides the FM instrument banks included with libADLMIDI, while external mode uses available ALSA MIDI devices.

Settings are saved between sessions, preserving the player’s configured options when it is opened again. It suits people working with Standard MIDI files, including those auditioning arrangements with FM voices, exploring retro-style sound, or checking output through MIDI hardware. Carlos Bravo’s current 1.0 release is open-source Music & Audio software for Linux.

The program requires Linux with snapd and runs on x86_64 (amd64) systems. A RetroWave board uses the retro-midi-player-opl3-gm:serial-port connection, while an external MIDI device uses retro-midi-player-opl3-gm:alsa. PC audio, display access, and home-folder access connect automatically to support desktop playback and visualization.
