Penguin Subtitle Player1.6.0

Load a subtitle file into Penguin Subtitle Player and display its timed text over video running in a separate player. It is a standalone, cross-platform subtitle player suited to online streaming, letting the video and subtitle file remain separate while the captions appear alongside the stream. The translucent subtitle window stays above other content, so it overlays the video without covering it completely.

It reads .srt, .ssa, .ass, and .vtt files, with drag-and-drop loading for quick access. Support for more than 700 encodings includes UTF-8 as the default, while automatic detection uses uchardet-supported encoding information. Users can adjust the frame size, background color and opacity, and font style to match different videos and viewing conditions. Playback controls provide fast-forward and rewind with a configurable time interval, skipping to a chosen time by clicking the time display, and moving to the previous or next subtitle.

The “Next Click Counts” option starts or pauses the subtitle timer after the first click outside the player, which helps synchronize captions with independently controlled video; it is enabled by right-clicking the play/pause button. Published by kristbaum, the open-source program is released under the GNU General Public License version 3. The current 1.6.0 build targets x86_64 (amd64), requires Linux with snapd, and requires an enabled compositing window manager. It has been tested with both HTML5 and Flash video on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
