Prometheus collects metrics from configured targets at set intervals, evaluates rule expressions, displays the results, and triggers alerts when defined conditions occur. Its multi-dimensional time-series model identifies each series by a metric name and key/value labels, while PromQL queries those dimensions. An HTTP pull model gathers the data, with an intermediary gateway available for pushing results from batch jobs; targets can be defined statically or discovered through service discovery.

Operators use Prometheus to observe Linux systems and services, investigate changing measurements, and build graphs or dashboards from the collected data. Autonomous single-server nodes work without distributed storage, while hierarchical and horizontal federation support larger monitoring arrangements. It is aimed at system administrators, service operators, and development teams monitoring infrastructure or applications.

Version 1.8.2 is the Linux x86_64 (amd64) open-source release published by Canonical as an unofficial snap repacked from source supplied by the Prometheus team, and it requires snapd. Docker images are available through Quay.io and Docker Hub. Source builds require the Go version specified in go.mod or newer, Node.js at the version in .nvmrc or newer, and npm 10 or later. Building with go install produces the prometheus and promtool binaries but expects web assets under web/ui/static and must run from the source-tree root unless the React interface is built with make assets; make build embeds those assets for running elsewhere. The Makefile also provides build, test, test-short, format, vet, and assets targets.
