Synkplay

Synkplay is an open-source Android application in the Video & Media Players category. It is an unofficial client for Syncplay that keeps video playback aligned for everyone in a shared room. It uses the same protocol as the desktop client, allowing people on the two clients to watch together. Users can play files stored on their device or paste a video link into the app.

The built-in player supports mpv, ExoPlayer, and the experimental KitePlayer engine. These engines cover a broad range of video containers and codecs, while also supporting external subtitles, chapters, and picture-in-picture playback. Participants can pause, seek, and resume together, use room chat with GIFs, and move through a shared playlist. Subtitle files can be added locally, or subtitles can be searched for and downloaded from OpenSubtitles. The app can host a server from the device without an account or setup, and managed rooms can give one person control over playback. Users can create their own themes and adjust many settings, while the interface is available in eight languages with additional translation through Weblate.

Synkplay is designed for Android users who want coordinated viewing with people using the mobile app or the Syncplay desktop client. It does not require an account and includes no analytics or advertising, communicating with the server selected by the user and with another service only when a related feature is used. The software is released under the AGPL 3.0 license, and its source is available through the project repository. MirrorNest distributes the official build from its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing it.
