Mercurygram Tor Plugin routes Mercurygram’s MTProto traffic through the Tor network when the app’s “Use Tor” option is enabled. It runs the Tor daemon as a background service and exposes a local SOCKS5 proxy that Mercurygram uses for this connection. This gives Mercurygram users Tor connectivity within the messaging app instead of requiring a separate messaging client.

The plugin is intended for people who want Mercurygram traffic to take the Tor route in situations where that connectivity is important. It has no user interface and does not operate on its own; without Mercurygram installed, nothing requests that the Tor service start. Its companion-app design keeps the Tor function tied specifically to Mercurygram rather than presenting a standalone Tor application.

The component is distributed separately so that only users choosing Tor use its Tor binaries and GeoIP databases, which require about 25 MB per architecture. Version 12.10.3.1 supports Android 7.0 and later on the arm64-v8a architecture. Mercurygram is required as the companion software, and the plugin is open-source.
