About

PilferShush Jammer is an open-source Android application in the Security & Privacy category. It provides controls intended to limit other applications’ access to the device microphone and to generate audio signals for jamming. The application is focused on microphone and audio control rather than serving as a general audio player.

In passive mode, PilferShush Jammer engages the device microphone without listening to or recording its audio. While this mode is active, other applications cannot use the microphone. Passive mode uses 0% CPU and has no noticeable battery use. It is not intended to remain enabled permanently because changes in audio focus, including those caused by voice over IP calls, can trigger switching behavior.

The application can stop and restart automatically when telephony interrupts it, and its automatic switching currently depends on changes to audio_focus_state. In active mode, the jammer emits tones in the NUHF range from 18 kHz to 24 kHz. Users can configure the carrier frequency, drift limit, and emission rate, such as a 20,000 Hz carrier with a 1,000 Hz drift limit and a slow rate varying around 19,000 Hz to 21,000 Hz. These tones can create audible artifacts, while the experimental white-noise output may be ineffective for blocking or may be annoying.

The device speaker may not produce enough amplitude to block unwanted NUHF signals, so results depend on testing with the particular device. Its open-source license identifies it as an application whose source is available under an open-source model rather than a proprietary-only program. MirrorNest mirrors the official Android build directly on its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing. This places PilferShush Jammer in MirrorNest’s Android Security & Privacy catalog while preserving its stated platform and license details.
